Processing & Handling
One of the key factors of the proven success is that Guardian®; is dimensionally stable, unlike traditional rag-based paper and other polymeric alternatives. It is manufactured in a process which orients the product equally in both the machine and transverse directions, resulting in an exceptionally flat and stable sheet, with consequent advantages during printing and processing.
Once printed and circulated, the reduction of dust from Guardian®; results in less maintenance and downtime on sorting equipment, Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) and note acceptors. The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is now experiencing faster processing throughput with better overall efficiency in its high speed note sorting equipment than with paper notes.
Manufacturers of ATMs, note validators, note counting/sorting, note accepting/dispensing machines have all experienced positive results with the processing of polymer banknotes.

Polymer notes perform better in machines because they:
- are soil resistant and therefore cleaner;
- create less dust;
- deposit less ink on the optical sensors, rollers and belts which, reduces the frequency of cleaning;
- remain stiffer and retain original dimensions after extended circulation and processing;
- are non-porous and non-fibrous which maintains a higher quality standard for longer.
Manual Handling
Polymer notes perform well and are fully functional in all manual handling conditions. They have their own characteristic feel and any handling differences to that of paper are minor and manageable over time. Some handling methods may need to be modified (eg. bulk folding and stapling), but there is no long term impact on the speed or ease of counting or sorting. And, as polymer notes are non-porous and non-fibrous, they remain cleaner and carry less bacteria than paper notes, resulting in cleaner hands and improved hygiene for manual counters.
The functionality of polymer banknotes not only makes them faster, easier and cleaner to process but results in significant reductions in machine jams, service call outs and maintenance staff.
