CENTRAL BANK OF NIGERIA ISSUES THE NEW 5, 10 & 50 NAIRA POLYMER BANKNOTES

The Central Bank of Nigeria issued the new 5, 10 & 50 Naira polymer banknotes (1.9 billion notes among the three denominations) into circulation on the 30th September to coincide with Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary.

The new 5,10 & 50 Naira polymer banknotes were launched by the President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, Federal Republic of Nigeria, Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’ Adua, GCGR, at the Presidential Villa.

The 20 Naira polymer note was the first polymer note issued on the 28th February 2007 by the former President Olusegun Obasanjo as a test case. The essence of the experiment was to determine the advantages and demerits of the polymer substance and its acceptance by Nigerians.

The Nigeria Central Bank Governor, Mr Sanusi Lamido Sanusi previously stated that, “The objectives of the currency reform were substantially achieved. The cost of printing banknotes was actually reduced, while the polymer note has been found to last longer in circulation. The polymer note does not tear easily nor get soiled easily.

Furthermore, the N20 note has gained wide public acceptance. Hence, the decision to convert the denominations of N5, N10 and N50 from paper to polymer banknotes, the justification being that lower banknote denominations have a higher circulation rate than higher denominations and are therefore more susceptible to wear and tear.”

The 5, 10 & 50 Naira polymer notes have retained their current designs and also have security features like the 20 Naira polymer note.

Substrate features included on the 5 & 10 Naira banknotes include:

- WinTHRU®
- SHAD H2O Switch®
- G-switch®

The 50 Naira includes the same as the 5 & 10 Naira with the addition of the IRIswitch®.

The existing denominations of the 5, 10 & 50 Naira paper notes, will remain legal tender and will circulate side by side with the new polymer notes for the next 6 months.
